Where it stands
Spoiler report (10-28, VERIFIED via Alaska Public Media): the NYT reported that the Peltola campaign, its lawyers and the DSCC worked to recruit Dan J. Sullivan of Petersburg and other would-be spoilers to dilute the incumbent's vote. The NYT cites interviews, texts and documents prepared for a potential lawsuit. A fired campaign manager, Elisa Rios, is quoted. Alaska Public Media notes it has not independently confirmed the reporting.
The campaign's response: "no involvement with either Sullivan campaign" (APM). It did not say whether Peltola herself was involved. The campaign and the DSCC denied the report to the Times but did not answer its detailed questions.
Reaction: Trump said Peltola "should suffer the Legal and Political consequences" and should be removed from the ballot. Murkowski cited "a pattern of lies and coverups". The RNC says coordination with a super PAC would be a campaign finance violation (an allegation). Former state elections attorney Bakalar: "Not a single illegal thing happened here."
DOJ suit (VERIFIED via APM): seeks to block certification if Sullivan loses by less than the Petersburg Sullivan's vote total. A ruling on motions to dismiss could come as soon as Friday 10-30.
Ranked choice: voters who rank both Sullivans see their vote transfer, which limits spoiler confusion (APM).
Money and early vote: not retrieved (FEC API rate-limited).
Risks to the lead
- Credibility. The report contradicts months of denials, and Murkowski's rebuke reaches independents who are central to Peltola's brand.
- No post-report polling. A +1.8 lead from 6 polls is well within the error.
- Legal and news churn through Friday's ruling keeps the story alive into the final weekend.
What's working
Cost-of-living closing message; the campaign pivoted back to "lowering costs" (APM, 10-28).
Legal experts, the Division of Elections and the League of Women Voters dispute the DOJ suit's legal basis (APM).
Top 5 recommendations
Disclose fully and truthfully what the campaign and its allies did, and take responsibility. Do not repeat a denial the reporting contradicts.
Commit publicly to no ballot gamesmanship and support voters' choice. Pledge to respect the result.
Return to cost-of-living contrasts with verified Sullivan votes:
"Dan Sullivan voted for the big bill on July 1, 2025. It passed 50–50, on the Vice President's tiebreak."
Senate roll 372, H.R. 1 "On Passage of the Bill", Sullivan Yea.
Run ranked-choice voter education: explain how ranking works, with no partisan steer.
Win independents back with validators, and don't attack Murkowski.
