Iowa Senate
Josh Turek (D) vs Rep. Ashley Hinson (R), open seat (Ernst retiring) · messaging analysis as of 2026-10-28
Turek has the money and the early vote, but the last three pollsters show Hinson ahead; her rhetorical breaks with Trump are blunting the contrast on her votes.

Model refresh (Catalyst v2.2, viz_data.json generated 2026-10-29, ANALYST): Dem win 50.6%, band Toss-up, poll margin D+2.6 across 41 polls, tipping share 11.5%. Supersedes any earlier model line below. ANALYST
FEC: Turek, Joshua (S6IA00298): receipts $24.29M, cash on hand $3.07M (through 2026-10-14); outside spending for $9.86M / against $0.47M. 48-hour notices since 10/15: 8 filings, $0.69M itemized. SOURCED
FEC: Arenholz, Ashley Hinson (S6IA00314): receipts $14.15M, cash on hand $2.17M (through 2026-10-14); outside spending for $4.32M / against $10.32M. 48-hour notices since 10/15: 8 filings, $0.53M itemized. SOURCED
An open Republican seat that the model rates a coin flip. It is one of the races most likely to decide Senate control.
Where it stands
Cash on hand at pre-general (Oct 14): Turek $3.07M, Hinson $2.17M. SOURCED
The last three pollsters show Hinson ahead: Trafalgar (Oct 13–15) R+2.2, co/efficient (Oct 15–19) R+3.2, InsiderAdvantage (Oct 21–22) R+2.2. GS Strategy (Oct 13) had D+2.2. SOURCED
Money is at rough parity: about $97M on the Turek side vs about $95M on the Hinson side, campaign plus outside spending. Anti-Turek outside spending ($65.0M) is the largest single pot. SOURCED
Early vote favours Democrats: 125,287 ballots by Oct 21, Democratic ballots up 29% vs 2022, Republican up 18%; 265,803 ballots by Oct 24. SOURCED
Age split (Emerson): over-50 voters Hinson +13, under-50 voters Turek +14. Trump approval in Iowa 42/51. SOURCED
Why the message isn't landing
- Hinson is running away from her own votes. She calls for the Iran war to end and criticises the beef-tariff suspension, while her site leads with "Standing with President Trump." Without a hard vote contrast, her rhetoric wins the frame.
- Older voters aren't moving. Hinson leads clearly among voters over 50 (Emerson +13; Trafalgar 65+ by about 10). Turek's health-cost message is not reaching them at the volume needed.
- Turek opened a base fight late. The "Stop the Nonsense" ad (Oct 25) drew criticism from One Iowa Action and from Republicans, pulling attention from costs and Iran in the final week.
What's working
Fundraising: Turek raised $24.3M vs Hinson's $14.1M (FEC, through Oct 14).
Early-vote surge among Democrats (+29% vs 2022).
Des Moines Register and Gazette endorsements; the "Richer" ad featuring a registered Republican constituent of Hinson's.
Debate hits on Hinson's D.C. per diem ("$50,000 of taxpayer dollars").
Top 5 recommendations
Iran: her record, worded exactly. Six roll calls are verified. Do not use "seven times."
"Ashley Hinson says the Iran war should end. On March 5, she voted against H.Con.Res. 38, the war-powers resolution directing the President to remove U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran."
House roll 85, 2026-03-05, failed 212–219; Hinson Nay.
Optional tag: "She voted no on all six House war-powers resolutions on Iran." Check: 2026 rolls 85 (H.Con.Res. 38), 114 (H.Con.Res. 40), 170 (H.Con.Res. 75), 199 (H.Con.Res. 86), 282 (H.Con.Res. 89), 307 (H.Con.Res. 93); Hinson Nay on each (voteview H119).
Votes over rhetoric: H.R. 1, twice.
"Ashley Hinson's own website says 'Standing with President Trump.' She voted for his big bill, twice: May 22 and July 3, 2025."
House rolls 145 (Yea) and 190 (Aye). Any health-cost claim about the bill needs a cited CBO figure before air.
Answer attendance with context. The 58% missed votes in the 2026 session is real; do not deny it. Pair the 81% participation since 2023 with Hinson's per diem, and explain 2026 absences only with a documented reason.
Over-50 voters: health costs and Medicare on local broadcast. This is the group where Hinson's lead sits.
Early-vote chase with Sand. Democrats are up 29% vs 2022; push under-50 and low-propensity voters. Do not extend the "Stop the Nonsense" fight; return to costs and Iran.
