Kansas Senate
Adam Hamilton (D) vs Sen. Roger Marshall (R, incumbent) · messaging analysis as of 2026-10-28
Hamilton has the money, independents and the early vote, but the church ad and Marshall's lead with 65+ and non-college voters keep it Tilt R.
Why this race matters

Where it stands
Recent polls are close: InsiderAdvantage (Oct 9–10) Hamilton 47.5, Marshall 46.7; RedBox (Oct 20–23) Marshall 45.7, Hamilton 45.0; NYT/Siena (early Oct, as cited by KCUR) 45–45. SOURCED
Money: about $54.2M benefiting Hamilton vs $31.0M benefiting Marshall, campaign plus outside spending. Hamilton raised $19.2M. SOURCED
Early vote: more than 200,000 ballots cast; no party split published. RedBox: already-voted Hamilton 58–36, not-yet-voted Marshall 49–40. SOURCED
RedBox crosstabs: independents Hamilton 58–23; 65+ Marshall 56–38; white non-college Marshall 55–35. SOURCED
Why the message isn't landing
- The church ad is setting the frame. Marshall's ad accusing Hamilton over a 2005 church-camp abuse case has true elements (the predator was at the camp, and was later convicted) and a FALSE central charge. A flat "it's a lie" response does not hold up.
- Older and non-college voters aren't moving. Hamilton's deficits are 65+ and white non-college voters, and the health-care message is not yet tied to a specific Marshall vote they recognise.
- The remaining voters lean Marshall. Hamilton has banked his early voters; the not-yet-voted and less-engaged lean Marshall, and the Republican crossover message is not yet concrete.
What's working
A clear money advantage ($54.2M vs $31.0M benefiting each side).
Independents (58–23) and voters under 45.
Democratic enthusiasm: 77% very enthusiastic vs about 50% of Republicans and independents (InsiderAdvantage).
Marshall's credibility problems: two businesses say his ad misused their images; KCUR rated the Methodist claim misleading.
Top 5 recommendations
Church ad: candid response in Hamilton's voice, built only from the Kansas City Star's findings and consistent with his debate line "That was a mistake on my part."
"Twenty years ago a volunteer at our church hurt kids. We should have gone to police sooner — today we would, first. Our church reported him, barred him, and changed its policy. The Kansas City Star rated Roger Marshall's claim that I protected him false."
Credibility frame.
"Kansas businesses say Roger Marshall used them in an attack ad without permission. Now he's telling you Adam Hamilton split the Methodist church. Fact-checkers say that's misleading too."
KCUR 2026-10-06 (images); KCUR 2026-10-27 (Methodist claim); Star FALSE rating on "protected."
65+ voters: his vote, stated on its own.
"On July 1, 2025, Roger Marshall cast his vote for the big bill — a bill that passed only on the Vice President's tiebreak."
Senate roll 372, 50–50 with VP tiebreak, Marshall Yea. Use the rural-hospital figure only as separate context, with its own citation: 28 Kansas rural hospitals are at immediate risk of closing (CHQPR, via KCUR 2026-06-11). Do not present it as a result of the vote; no source ties those closures to the bill.
Republican crossover. Use Hamilton's own lines: "The Biden policies when it came to the border were a disaster," and on tariffs for farmers, "instability, chaos and corruption."
Chase the not-yet-voted in Sedgwick County (17 satellite sites opened Oct 27). Prioritise lower-attention Hamilton-leaning voters over the already-voted.
