Michigan 7th District
William Lawrence (D) vs Rep. Tom Barrett (R, incumbent) · messaging analysis as of 2026-10-28
Lawrence leads thin polling in a Trump+1 seat; Livingston margins decide it.
Why this race matters
Tilt D
Catalyst forecast v2.2, as of 2026-10-30. Tipping-point share = share of simulations in which this race supplies the decisive seat. Rater consensus from published ratings. Methodology and sources.
Model refresh (Catalyst v2.2, viz_data.json generated 2026-10-29, ANALYST): Dem win 63.2%, band Tilt D, Thomas More (H2MI07123): receipts $8.24M, cash on hand $1.04M (through 2026-10-14); outside spending for $0.23M / against $2.08M. 48-hour notices since 10/15: 6 filings, $0.15M itemized. SOURCED
FEC: Lawrence, William (H6MI07298): receipts $4.16M, cash on hand $0.63M (through 2026-10-14); outside spending for $0.83M / against $3.73M. 48-hour notices since 10/15: 10 filings, $0.24M itemized. SOURCED
A Republican-held Lansing-area seat that Trump carried by about one point in 2024 (NYT polls page). It's one of the clearest Democratic pickup chances in the House.
Where it stands
Ad spending tops $61M, the most of any House race in the country (WKAR, Oct 21). SOURCED
District: Ingham, Clinton, Shiawassee and Livingston counties, plus parts of Eaton, Genesee and Oakland (WKAR, Oct 27). SOURCED
Money (FEC receipts and cash on hand) not retrieved: FEC DEMO_KEY rate limit.
Why the message isn't landing
- Thin polling. Only 3 polls; the lead could be noise.
- Livingston County. Barrett ran about 10.5 points better there in 2024 than in 2022 (WKAR); Lawrence needs to cut into it.
- Ad saturation. At $61M+, both candidates complain about the ad volume (WKAR); a single contrast is hard to land.
What's working
Data centers: Lawrence backs a federal moratorium (WKAR, 2026-10-27). Barrett's H.R. 10119, Protecting Local Control of Data Centers Act, bars federal agencies from overriding state or local siting authority. Introduced 2026-08-20, referred to Energy and Commerce, no further action (GovInfo text; congress.gov). The NDA ban is a separate bill he co-introduced, the No Secrets for Data Centers Act (barrett.house.gov, 2026-09-24). The grid-cost provision is UNVERIFIED.
Crossover anecdote: a two-time Trump-voting farm couple near Mason has a Lawrence yard sign (WKAR, Oct 27). This is an anecdote, not a trend.
A 24-town tour in the final week (The Gander, Oct 27 headline, unread).
Top 5 recommendations
Close on data centers in Livingston and Mason, stating both positions accurately. Do not call Barrett pro-data-center: his bill restricts them.
"Will Lawrence wants a national moratorium on new data centers. Tom Barrett's bill keeps Washington from overriding local decisions, but it doesn't stop new data centers."
Hold Ingham turnout (MSU campus, Lansing) during early voting.
No vote-based attack lines yet. No Barrett roll calls were pulled; any vote claim needs its roll number first.
Answer the "extreme positions" attack (Barrett on Newsmax, Oct 24 headline, unread) with Lawrence's own phased-Medicare framing (Livingston Post, Oct 26 headline, unread). Line needs verification.
Cut through the ad clutter with door-to-door and local validators, not more TV.
