Where it stands
Nomination context (Wikipedia): Paxton beat Cornyn in the May 26 runoff, 63.8%, after a late Trump endorsement. Talarico beat Jasmine Crockett in the primary, 52.4%.
Polls: headlines over the last two weeks describe a deadlocked race. NYT (10/15): "Talarico Remains Ahead ... but His Lead Has Narrowed". CBS (10/18) and Fox News (10/21) call it a toss-up or photo finish. FOX 7 (10/23) has Talarico leading in a new poll. UMass Lowell (10/8) has it tied. Yahoo (10/26) reports two polls that disagree. Crosstab: KERA (10/26) reports Talarico leads among Latinos and falls short among rural voters; FOX 7 (10/8) has him leading among younger voters.
Money (FEC pre-general, through Oct 14): Talarico receipts $146.3M, cash on hand $9.92M; Paxton receipts $22.3M, cash on hand $4.78M. That is about 6.5:1 in receipts, larger than the 4:1 The Texan reported. SOURCED
UH Hobby School poll (Oct 10–14, n=2,000 LV, ±2.9): Talarico 48, Paxton 46, Brown (L) 3, undecided 3. Independents: Talarico 60, Paxton 32. Favorability: Talarico 47, Paxton 41. SOURCED
Early vote: Newsweek (10/27) reports record-breaking early voting. Partisan breakdown not retrieved.
Debates: none held. Paxton has declined. Talarico did a CNN town hall alone (Axios, 10/14). Trump has said he wants a debate (PBS, 10/9).
Closing pushes: Trump is visiting Lubbock (Kalshi News, 10/26). Abbott and Cruz are campaigning for Paxton (Dallas News, 10/26).
Risks to the lead
- The Paxton tax ad. Per FactCheck.org (10/23), Paxton's ad claims Talarico "voted for an income tax". He did not: he opposed the 2019 joint resolution for a constitutional ban on an income tax. The ad also clips his "taxed more" quote, which was about wealthy donors. It is misleading, but it is on broadcast TV and the vote against the ban gives it a hook.
- Republican consolidation late in the race. Trump, Abbott and Cruz are all closing for Paxton in a state where Democrats haven't won a Senate race since 1988.
- Weakness with rural voters (KERA crosstab, 10/26).
What's working
The money advantage (about 6.5:1 in FEC receipts).
The debate-dodging contrast (Houston Chronicle 10/27, Northeastern 10/13).
The bipartisan tax-cut message. Talarico's ad says he "brought both parties together" in "passing the largest property tax cut in Texas history". FactCheck.org confirms he voted for the cut, but his role in shepherding it is "unclear".
Leads with Latino and younger voters.
Top 5 recommendations
Rebut the tax ad with the fact-check itself. Draft: "Independent fact-checkers say Ken Paxton's ad took James Talarico's words out of context. Talarico voted for the property tax cut." This is VERIFIED (FactCheck.org 10/23). Do not claim he authored or led the cut.
Close on Paxton refusing to debate. Draft: "Ken Paxton won't debate. What's he hiding?" The no-debate fact needs a current check before air (Houston Chronicle, 10/27). Line needs verification.
Run a rural affordability push (rural deficit per KERA). Line needs verification for specific claims.
Turn out Latino and young voters during the record early vote.
Contrast on Paxton's record. Line needs verification: no primary sources were pulled on the impeachment or legal history, so any line must cite them exactly.

What changed since 10-27
Ad line, confirmed: Talarico says Paxton had not answered a debate request in 85 days (Houston Public Media, 10-12). https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/politics/election-2026/2026/10/12/564154/talarico-returns-to-campaign-trail-renewing-call-for-debate-with-paxton/ (fetched 2026-10-29)
Rural line, confirmed: a UH Hobby School poll (10-23) has Talarico leading among Latino voters but trailing among rural voters. https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/politics/election-2026/2026/10/23/565125/talarico-hinojosa-lead-among-latinos-fall-short-among-rural-voters-according-to-new-poll/ (fetched 2026-10-29)
FEC corrects the money edge: about 6.5:1 in receipts, not 4:1.
Read the UH Hobby poll: Talarico +2; independents break 60–32 for him.
Trump made his third Texas rally this month (NYT, Oct 28 headline); Talarico rallied the same day.
